China’s Wang Xin stunned top seed Saina Nehwal of India to reach the semi-finals of the RM425,000 Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009.

The 24-year-old Wang, who is playing in her first major overseas tournament, showed no respect for the former world junior champion as she carved out a 21-15, 21-17 victory at Bandaraya Stadium.

“I’m grateful to be given the chance to compete in this tournament as I have never played in a major overseas tournament before,” said an excited Wang, who plays Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo tomorrow. “I hope to go on and win this title to show I deserve more chances to travel.”

Mew Choo, meanwhile, is trying to get her confidence back after a string of first round loses and several injuries.

“I have lost so much confidence due to my injuries and this tournament represents the first step back for me to show what I’m capable of,” said the former SEA Games champion.

“I need to get as many victories I can get under my belt before the World Championships in August and I feels great to reach the semi-finals.

“I never played Wang before and this is the first time I have watched her play. I will need to go back to the hotel and analyse the tapes to come up with a plan how to beat her tomorrow.”

The other semi-final is between top seed Pi Hongyan of France and China’s Wang Shixian. Pi defeated Germany’s Juliane Schenk 21-19, 26-24 while Wang beat Singapore’s Fu Mingtian 21-19, 21-10.
