World No.1s Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty stayed on course for back-to-back titles when they reached the women’s doubles semi-finals in the RM425,000 Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009.

Fresh from their win in the Indonesia Open on Sunday, the Malaysia pair are gunning for something they have never done before – win titles in consecutive tournaments.

It looked like their jinx was going to continue against Japan’s Rie Eto-Yu Wakita as their opponents outplayed them to win the first game 21-13. The shock of being blown off court woke up the pair and they came back strongly to win the next two games 21-15, 21-10.

“This is the first time we have played them and we were surprised by how fast they are,” said Pei Tty. “As such, we decided to play them at our own pace and not try to fight them and this worked in our favour.

“We have never won back-to-back tournaments before and this represents a good chance for us to do so. It’s not going to be easy tomorrow as our opponents Frances Liu-Vanessa Neo are playing well.

The Singaporeans book their date with Eei Hui-Pei Tty after beating young Malaysians Nairul Suhada Latif-Amelia Alicia Anscelly 21-17, 12-21, 21-19.

The other semi-final is an all-China affair between Gao Ling-Wei Yili and Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli, who beat Thailand’s Savitree Amitrapai-Vacharaporn Munkit 21-9 21-4 and Indonesia’s Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati 21-11, 21-12, respectively.

Meanwhile, youngsters Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong upset third seeds Fairuzizuan Tazari-Zakry Latif 20-22, 23-21, 21-11 to reach the semi-finals of the men’s doubles, where they will face fellow Malaysians Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen for a place in the final.

Hee Chun-Wee Kiong lost the first game to Fairuzizuan-Zakry 20-22 but used their superior fitness and speed to win the next two games 23-21, 21-11.

“We have exceeded out target which was to reach the quarter-finals and this win is a bonus,” said Hee Chun. “We used our speed to get the advantage and control the rhythm of the game.”

Malaysia’s challenge in the mixed doubles ended when Ong Jian Guo-Chong Sook Chin were beaten 21-19, 21-7 by Indonesia Open champion Zheng Bo-Ma Jin.

Tomorrow's sem-finals will begin at 2pm.
