Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen (pic) will look to end a dreadful run of defeats to Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong when they clash in the men’s doubles final at the RM425,000 Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009 tomorrow. Teik Chai-Bin Shen have lost three times to their rivals this year but hope to turn the tables as they seek their first title of the year.
Today, the former national players defeated fellow Malaysians Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong 21-11, 21-15 while Kien Keat-Boon Heong overcame Indonesia’s Alvent Yulianto Chandra-Hendra Aprida Gunawan (Ina) 21-13, 17-21, 21-11.
“We lost to them in the Swiss, Indonesia and Pahang Opens but we are hoping tomorrow will be the day we claim an unexpected victory,” said a delighted Teik Chai.
“Winning will also help us attract sponsors, which is every important to independent players like ourselves. We have been taking it one match at a time and now that we are in the final, we will treat it as just another meeting.”
Despite leaving the national set-up earlier this year, the duo still train with the national team and Bin Shen said: “We are grateful to our sponsors for backing us and also to BAM for allowing us to train with the national team. This has certainly been a big help to us.”
Meanwhile, Kien Keat said he and Boon Heong are determined to add the Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009 title to their collection ahead of the World Championships in Hyderabad, India, in August.
“It will be nice to win the tournament before the World Championships but we are not going to put undue pressure on ourselves,” he said. “I feel the standard among the top doubles players is quite even so we just have to work hard and keep focus.”
