Chen Long, whose name can be translated as ‘Dragon’, proved too fiery for a lethargic Taufik Hidayat at the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009 in Johor Baru here today.

The 21-year-old former world junior champion from China, stunned second seed Taufik 21-14, 20-22, 21-19 in the first round of the RM425,000 tournament, the second major Open organised by the Badminton Association of Malaysia this year. In January, Bukit Jalil played host to the Malaysia Open Super Series event.

Chen Long, who has yet to win a major senior title, declared his win over the former world and Olympic gold medallist could be the first step towards him ending his championship drought.

“The win has given me a lot of confidence and I believe I can go on and win this tournament,” said Chen Long, who later in the day defeated Malaysia’s Wee Chung Pei 21-10, 21-10 to reach tomorrow’s third round.

“It is about time I start winning some tournaments and what better way than to start right here in Johor Baru.”

Taufik admitted he didn’t play too well today but said the loss was not going to disrupt his preparation for World Championships in Hyderabad, India in August.

“I didn’t play too well today and Chen Long took advantage. I felt a little stiff today as the court was quite hard,” said the 27-year-old, who has only just returned to training after a bout of dengi fever.

“However, I’m still focussing on winning my second world title in August. I just have to train harder and make sure my condition is on the right track.”

Top seed and world No.1 Lee Chong Wei didn’t have any problems in his opening two matches, destroying Singapore’s Derek Wong 21-12, 21-11 in the morning and then hammering compatriot Lim Fang Yang 21-9, 21-14.

“Although this is my third tournament in a row, I don’t feel tired at all. My fitness level is still quite high and I’m determined to win this title for the Malaysian crowd,” said Chong Wei, who won his third Super Series title in Indonesia last weekend.
