The withdrawal of world and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia from the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold tournament has brighten the chances of an all-Malaysian final in the men’s doubles.

It also gives second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and third seeds Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif the chance to make up for their disappointment at the just concluded Indonesia Open.

In Jakarta, Kien Keat-Boon Heong were beaten by China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the semi-final while Fairuzizuan-Zakry lost to eventual champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung of South Korea in the quarter-finals.

Markis-Hendra, who lost to the Koreans in the semi-finals, have decided to stay home to work on their game ahead of their defence of the world championships title in August.

Despite their absence here, there are other Indonesian pairs who could spoil the party for the Malaysians.

In the same half as Kien Keat-Boon Heong are Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan, Candra Wijaya-Rendra Wijaya and Wifqi Windarto-Afiat Yuris Wirawan.

In the other half of the draw, Indonesians Luluk Hadiyanto-Joko Riyadi and Indonesia-born Hendri Kurniawan Saputra-Hendra Wijaya of Singapore will be out to make life difficult for Fairuzizuan-Zakry.

China have sent their back-up pairs while South Korea and Denmark are not represented in the tournament.
