Top seed Lee Chong Wei continued his reign as “The Untouchable” in the local circuit for the eighth consecutive year when he bagged the men’s singles title in the Pahang Open with ease yesterday.

The cool Chong Wei showed his superiority over back-up shuttler Chan Kwong Beng by wrapping up the final with a 21-11, 21-19 win in just 30 minutes at the Pahang Sports Complex Indoor Stadium.

World number one Chong Wei could have finished off Kwong Beng even quicker but he preferred to take his time to ensure the fans got their money’s worth.

The only person who was under tremendous pressure during the men’s singles final yesterday was probably be the umpire, who got the scores wrong three times and was, naturally, booed by the fans.

Kwong Beng, however, deserves credit, especially in the second game, when he put up some resistance.

But a lack of experience and quality in Kwong Beng’s game showed the disparity in standard between the two players.

Chong Wei had mixed response over his win yesterday.

“I am happy to stay unbeaten in the local circuit for so long,” said Chong Wei.

“But, deep in my heart, I hope a youngster will break that record one day. I will probably be the happiest person when that happens.”

Chong Wei, however, could not stop gushing about Kwong Beng’s breakthrough performance.

“He is a good attacking player but there is still a lot to improve. It is an achievement for him to have come this far and I am happy for him. I hope he will continue to go far,” he said.

“It is important for our back-up shuttlers to have the right attitude in training and the burning desire to win.”

Chong Wei’s next mission will be to defend his title in the Singapore Open, which will be held from June 9-14.

The 21-year-old Kwong Beng, meanwhile, was gracious in defeat.

“I have trained with Chong Wei for some time now and I think he gave me chance by not killing me off quickly,” said Kwong Beng.

“But still, I am satisfied with my game although there is so much more to be improved on. My coach (Misbun Sidek) called me and said that he was happy that I made it to the final.

“I must continue to work my way up from here. This is certainly a good start for me.”

In the men’s doubles, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif finally got the monkey off their back when they won their first local Open title yesterday.

And they did it in just 30 minutes, beating veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah 21-14, 12-21, 21-12 in the final.

There was an upset in Division Two when Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players Ow Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng lost 19-21, 24-22, 10-21 to the Kuala Lumpur-Perak combination of Cheah Like Hou-Chow Pak Chuu.

Pak Chuu was dropped from the BAM fold last year.
