It was a harsh draw for the Danish men’s singles players after all three players were drawn in the same half of the draw for the YONEX French Open 2010 Super Series tournament next month.
On the other hand, the draw gave Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat, who is chasing points to qualify for the season ending VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals, plenty to cheer as he should, based on current form, qualify easily for the semi-finals.
The Finals, where only the top eight players and pairs in the Super Series Standings qualify, will be played in Chinese Taipei on 5-9 January 2011. The Indonesian is currently in 15th position in the Super Series Standings.
But it was unfortunate that Denmark’s Peter Gade, the top seed, Jan Jorgensen and Joachim Persson were all drawn in the same half, thus preventing an all-Denmark singles final.
Gade, who is ranked No 2 in the Super Series Standings, opens his campaign against England’s Carl Baxter and can only play either Jorgensen or Persson in the semi-finals.
Jorgensen and Persson are, however, expected to meet in the quarter-finals.
On the other hand, Taufik is likely to play England’s Rajiv Ouseph in the quarter-finals and although the Englishman has improved tremendously over thueruie past few months, it will be difficult to stop the Indonesian.
In the women’s singles, China’s top seed Wang Yihan is the top seed and has a clear path to the quarters as she is down to play qualifiers in the first and second rounds. Yohan is likely to play Russia’s Ella Diehl in the quarters.
Denmark’s Tine Baun, who is the No 2 seed, plays Ukraine’s Elena Prus in the first round but faces a tricky path after that with China’s former world champion Zhu Lin and Li Xuerui likely to be waiting for her in the second round and quarter-finals respectively.
In the men’s doubles, top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen are expected to easily qualify for the last four against Indonesia’s Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan while 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medalists Anthony Clark-Nathan Robertson are expected to take on Thailand’s Songphon Anugritayawon-Sudket Prapakamol in the quarter-finals.
No 2 seed Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan have Netherland’s Ruud Bosch-Koen Ridder in the first round and should progress to the quarter-finals where they will face a stern test in the form of Malaysia’s Tan Bin Shen-Gan Teik Chai.
The women’s doubles have been hit hard by withdrawals and absentees with Petya Nedelcheva-Anastasia Russkikh, the Hulgaria-Russia partnership, given top billing.
Due to the Asian Games in Guangzhou on 13-21 November, many of the Asian countries like China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore are not sending their best players or have decided to skip the tournament completely.
In the mixed doubles, Indonesia’s Hendra Gunawan-Vita Marissa will face Russia’s Vitaliy Durkin-Nina Vislova in the opener while Poland’s Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba, the No 2 seeds, play a qualifier in the first round.
