There was some good news in the bad for Wong Mew Choo (pic), who failed to make the final of the RM425,000 Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2009 at Bandaraya Stadium today.

The former SEA Games champion, who has only recently returned from one injury after another, declared she is now pain-free but needs to improve her mental strength if she is to return to the level which saw her win the 2007 China Open.

“I’m able to move around the court quite easily now and that is a relief,” said Mew Choo, who will now spend the next two months preparing for the World Championships in Hyderabad, India.

“I tried my best today but Wang was a little better. Although I had the lead, I felt tired towards the end of the first game,” admitted Mew Choo.

“It was the same in the second game where I had to chase Wang after she opened up a big lead. It was only after my coach gave me pointers did I close the gap but it was too little too late.

“I need to focus on my game right now and try to be more confident. I don’t have the confidence to go for shots but I think the next two months will be crucial.”

Wang said: “I think coming through the qualifying rounds was a blessing in disguise as it helped me get use to the courts. This is my first ever international tournament and I’m delighted to have reached the final.”

Wang will now play another qualifier, Wang Shixian, who stunned top seed Pi Hongyan of France 21-14, 21-15. The 2008 Asian Junior silver medallist was in top form against Pi and fully deserved her place in the title decider.

Both Chinese players are seeking their first international title.
