Youngsters Nairul Suhada Latif-Amelia Alicia Anscelly fully deserved the luck which came their way as they reached the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles event at thr RM425,000 Yonex-Sunrise Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold 2009 at Bandaraya Stadium today.

The Bukit Jalil Sports School products upset fourth seeds Nicole Grether-Charmaine Reid after the German-Canadian combination limped out injured in the second game 17-7 down after losing the first game 21-19.

Although they were not given much chance against their more fancied opponents, the two Malaysians, who first made their names by playing in the 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit a couple of years ago, were on the offensive right from the start.

That tactic paid dividends and they will now meet Singapore’s Frances Liu-Vanessa Neo, who defeated Malaysians Goh Liu Ying-Ng Hui Lin 21-14, 21-16.

There was more joy for the Malaysians as top seeds Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty also reached the last eight when they defeated India’s Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa 23-25, 21-16, 21-12.

In the men’s doubles, Razif Latif-Chan Peng Soon, Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kion and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong all reached the final eight. Ong Jian Guo-Chong Sook Chin are the only mixed doubles pair to make it past the second round.

Malaysia are guarantee two places in the men’s doubles semi-finals as Razif-Peng Soon will face Teik Chai-Bin Shen while Zakry-Fairuzizuan meet Hee Chun-Wee Kion.
