Three of the eight women's singles seeds of the Singapore Open 2009 were defeated in the first preliminary rounds on Wednesday.

Chinese badminton player Lu Lan, the seventh seed of the women's singles, lost 8-21, 21-9 and 21-19 to Singapore shuttler Fu Mingtian, while fourth seeded Wang Chen from China's Hong Kong and fifth seeded French player Pi Hongyan lost to their counterpart from Thailand and Bulgaria respectively.

In the men's singles, strong medal contenders including defending champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark, Park Sung Hwan of South Korea, as well as Chen Jin of China have all made it to the second preliminary rounds.

The first preliminary rounds have left the Chinese team with two players for the men's singles, four players for the women's singles, one pair for the men's doubles, three pairs for the women's doubles and two pairs for the mixed doubles in the second preliminary rounds.

The Aviva Open Singapore 2009, the fifth super series badminton event of the year, kicked off at Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday. With a total prize of 200,000 U.S. dollars, the six-day event has brought together over 240 top players from 28 countries and regions.
