Shuttler Lee Chong Wei could have taken it easy after his early exit in the on-going Singapore Open and leave with the rest of the team for the Indonesia Open in Jakarta.

But he is not one to sit idle and twiddle his thumbs. Perhaps, that explains why he is the world No. 1 shuttler today.

The 26-year-old flew back to Kuala Lumpur on Friday so that he could train for a day with the rest of the team at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara the next morning.

Although it was just a one-day training, Chong Wei felt it would do him a lot of good as he bids to bounce back strongly in the Indonesia Open, which will begin on Wednesday.

“There were only two Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players in Singapore – me and Tan Chun Seang. So there was no point staying back.”

“I felt that it was better for me to come back and continue with my training as I have another competition coming up.

“In fact, I tried to make it for the SAM (Sportswriters Association of Malaysia) award ceremony but it was a bit too late,” said Chong Wei, who won the award based on his Olympic silver medal feat in Beijing last year.

Chong Wei failed to retain his Singapore Open title when he lost 22-24, 22-20, 19-21 to Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh in the second round.

“I hope to put up a better show in the Indonesia Open. It’s not going to be easy as there will be a full field for the Indonesia Open and I could face China’s Lin Dan in the semi-finals,” said Chong Wei, who won the Indonesian Open in 2007.

Chong Wei’s bid to capture a third Super Series title will definitely be tougher as his arch-rival Lin Dan, who has dropped to third in the world rankings, is in the same half of the draw.

Chong Wei will begin his campaign against German Marc Zwiebler before a meeting with either Lu Yi or compatriot Hafiz Hashim.

An expected quarter-final clash against either China’s Bao Chunlai or South Korea’s Park Sung-hwan should then set the stage for a confrontation with the Olympic champion.

After the Indonesia Open, Chong Wei will play in the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold in Johor Baru from June 23-28.
