WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei silenced the notorious Senayan roar with a clinical display against local favourite Taufik Hidayat to clinch his second Indonesia Open crown in Jakarta yesterday.
The Indonesian supporters, as hostile as ever, tried to rattle Chong Wei but the Malaysian remained solid to secure a comprehensive 21-9, 21-14 win in just 31 minutes for his third Super Series title.
The supporters taunted, jeered and screamed but a defiant Chong Wei neutralised Taufik's famed jumping smashes with a stout defence.
Taufik could only contain Chong Wei's aggression in the initial stages of the first game as the latter hardly made any mistakes to win 21-9.
However, Taufik managed to put some life into his record seeking charge, he was aiming for a seventh Indonesia Open crown, as he led 7-1 after Chong Wei started making some unforced errors.
But the Malaysian didn't let his opponent run away and won six points on the trot to effectively demoralise the Indonesian.
There was only one winner at that stage and despite Taufik's efforts, there was little the former Olympic champion or his volatile supporters could do to stop Chong Wei from clinching the crown.
Chong Wei's win was worth US$18,750 (RM66,600) but more than that he will be relieved to have turned his form around within a week after a shock second round defeat to Vietnam's Nguyen Tian Minh in the Singapore Open.
It was ironic that Chong Wei took a similar route to his maiden Indonesia Open victory in 2007 where he lost to compatriot Hafiz Hashim in the first round of the Singapore Open before bouncing back in Jakarta to nail his first Super Series title.
His successes in the Malaysia, Swiss and Indonesia Opens are enough to cement his stay as the World No 1 for 10 consecutive months.
"I didn't play well in the Singapore Open and my intention was to put up a better performance in Indonesia, and I managed to do that," said Chong Wei after the victory.
Taufik apologised to his supporters for not being able to lift his performance but vowed to come back next year for another shot at the title.
Meanwhile, national singles coach Rashid Sidek, in a telephone interview from Jakarta, said Chong Wei's focus made the difference yesterday.
"The crowd wanted to make it difficult but Chong Wei was mentally focused today (yesterday). He never allowed the Indonesian supporters to distract him," said Rashid.
"Chong Wei was very steady and controlled the match. He managed to subdue Taufik by outsmarting him with netplay and also retrieved his opponent's smashes easily.
"Taufik found it hard to counter Chong Wei who rarely made mistakes. He was very cool on court and showed that he knows how to handle hostile supporters and this augurs well for him."
In the women's singles final, India's Saina Nehwal completed her fairytale run by beating Wong Lin of China 12-21, 21-18, 21-9 to clinch her first Super Series title.
Top Korean pair Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae also returned to winning ways when they secured the men's doubles title with an emphatic 21-15, 21-18 win over China's Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng.
China were saved the blushes in the mixed doubles when Zheng Bo-Ma Jin beat Yong Dae-Lee Hyo Jung 21-17, 8-21, 21-16 for their only title in Jakarta.
