CONTRARY to speculations, BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Salleh has assured Indonesia's former world champion Hendrawan that he will not be forced to accept the national association's existing programmes.
In fact, Nadzmi urged Hendrawan to come up with his own plans to improve the standard of the national shuttlers.

Hendrawan, who has accepted BAM's offer to be national singles coach, will officially start work on July 1. He will be on holiday in Malaysia with his family next week and is expected to meet Nadzmi to discuss his coaching programme.

There have been talks that Hendrawan may be put in charge of struggling seniors Hafiz Hashim and Kuan Beng Hong instead of the back-up players. On the issue, Nadzmi said he wants to listen to Hendrawan first before making any decision.

"We do have our plans but we want to hear from Hendrawan first. We won't force him to accept them. Hendrawan should present his plans to us first," said Nadzmi at the Proton Centre of Excellence Complex in Shah Alam yesterday.
"I've seen him as a player. Hendrawan played confidently and intelligently on court. There are a lot of qualities he can pass on to the younger players.

"We need to hear from him first before deciding on which group of players can benefit under his guidance."

National singles head coach Rashid Sidek has expressed surprise over speculations that Hendrawan will only be utilised to guide Hafiz and Beng Hong although he has yet to discuss with the Indonesian.

Rashid believes that Hendrawan's presence will benefit the back-up and elite back-up players and he is not against the idea of Hafiz and Beng Hong training under the Indonesian.

Nadzmi, who is also Proton Holdings Berhad chairman, yesterday flagged off the Malaysian convoy of 11 players and four officials to the Singapore Open, which begins on Tuesday.

The players and officials will travel on five Proton Exora MPVs and make stop-overs at two Proton Edar outlets in Malacca and Plentong, Johor, before heading for Singapore.
